Today is the third book club video of May and I’m talking about Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. If you haven’t read the book yet, don’t worry because there is a review that has no spoilers!

I’m taking a big scary leap towards something new at the moment. I’m embracing this time of change and going for my dreams and letting go of the expectations of normal. What does my dream life look like? That’s simple, writing and practicing yoga everyday and spending time with my dog, looking after my health. Growing up I wanted to be a career woman, I wanted to be ambitious and do a highly paid job. But my body isn’t ‘normal’, my energy just isn’t what it could be and I’m really badly effected by winter. This afternoon I saw the absolute legend that is @sjdooley talking at The Sage. She has been an inspiration of mine for ages as a strong woman who has overcome barriers to have an amazing career. Today she talked about how the thing we do in our spare time is the thing that we should try and do as a career and that we should never be afraid to knock on doors and ask for what we want. It felt incredibly poignant for where I’m at right now. I’m starting a new journey and going for what I want. Rest can be challenging. I’m in a time of change and my mind is full of creative ideas, excitement and nerves. It makes sleeping a tea challenge. • Pranayama and meditation can help soothe anxiety and calm a racing mind. I like to use controlled breathing and body scan meditation to prepare for sleep when even a good book isn’t doing the trick. I use a body scan meditation from the 10 per cent happier app as my @lumie.lights slowly dims and this usually does the trick. •

The end of the week is the perfect time for a little meditation and some time on the mat. * Ahimsa is one of the yamas of yogic philosophy and it’s been on my mind a lot this week. Ahimsa off the mat means non-harm, hoping always to help others and never harm. On the mat, ahimsa means not pushing ourselves too far in our practice. Actively participating in non-harm towards our own bodies. Pushing our bodies too far can happen on the mat when the ego is at play, but it can also happen off the mat when we become drawn into competition with others, comparing our bodies, abilities and accomplishments. To ensure non-harm towards ourselves off the mat we need a purpose, we need a work life balance and we need to be unafraid to do what is right for us. How can we find this balance? Ahimsa sounds simple enough. Don’t harm others, don’t harm yourself. But it can be far more difficult than that. Tonight I’m meditating on how I can live ahimsa on and off the mat. How can I practice non-harm towards others and towards myself? What have you been thinking about and meditating on recently?

This time of year is always tricky for me. Partly it’s my SAD making me hate the dark nights and partly it’s the fact that fifteen years ago at about this time I was really poorly and my mam spotted a lump on my neck that changed my life. This time of year my physical symptoms are worse and I struggle to keep my chin up and keep going. I doubt my ability to do anything. This time of year is full of bad memories and doubt. Recently I’ve been thinking about positive thinking and manifesting - speak it aloud to the universe so that it can happen. In my yoga classes I talk about mindfulness and being present, focusing on the breath and accepting your body for what it is. On the mat I encompass all of these things. I trust myself, my body and the practice. But at this time of year it feels almost impossible to carry those thoughts and practices off the mat. This time of transition and darkness is the hardest time of year for me and many other people. • What can we do? • Well here is my plan... 1) No decision making right now. Wait until after you have time to rest, wait until the winter solstice is behind you. 2) Meditate every day. If you can’t get to the physical asanas every day then use meditation and pranayama. First thing on a morning, last thing before bed, just before you eat lunch. Whenever, just breathe. 3) Avoid the news for a few days. The world is stressful and we all know it. Give yourself the gift of a news (and possibly social media) break. Focus on you and your present moment, it’s not selfish. 4) Turn to others. There are probably way more of your friends and family feeling the same way so start the conversation and lean on each other. 5) Journal. Write your worries to release them. Write your hopes and dreams to manifest them. • It’s a hard time of year but soon the darkest night will be behind us and we can look forward to brighter days.

Chilly Sunday mornings hiding inside have me dreaming of long hikes and fresh air. I’ll be heading out soon but the Sunday overwhelm is real with a very busy and stressful week ahead. • If you don’t feel like heading out into the cold, roll out your mat and try a warming yoga practice to build tapas (heat) in the body and fight off the winter chill. I’m going to be heading to my mat later today, that’s for sure!
